Washington Green Schools is organized into five levels (Levels 1-5) and five environmental categories. Certification at each level is achieved by choosing a focus category and completing six key steps. These include forming a Green Team, completing an assessment and related lasting change, verifying results, and sharing your story.

Your first step towards getting your school certified is to register. Schools that are registered have access to full assessments and assessment guides, stories shared from other schools, helpful resources, and more!

After getting certified, a school can choose to advance to the next level, or renew at the current level. Certification last for two school years.

Advancement process: To certify at the next level, a school chooses a new category, completes the corresponding assessment, implements a Lasting Change and verifies its impact, and takes action in the four other categories.

Renewal process: To continue certification status at the same level, a school completes an assessment in their previous category, implements a Lasting Change and verifies its impact, and chooses new action items from the other four categories.
