Q: Who manages this program?
A: A Steering Team manages this program and involves government agency educators, school educators, and utility experts with decisions. A team of consultants is coordinating and implementing the pilot. Learn more about us.
Q: How can our school participate?
A: Washington Green Schools is currently in a pilot phase, to test and improve the program. During 2009, this certification program will be made available to all schools in Washington state. Until then, you are welcome to use the website for inspiration. If your school is in King County, please go to http://www.metrokc.gov/dnrp/swd/greenschools/index.asp
Q: Does it cost a lot of money?
A: There is no charge to participate in the program. As long as you have web access you can download documents and contact us. There may be costs if your school or district voluntarily decides to modify facilities or take other actions. However, this could also result in lower long term or short term operating or utility costs.
Q: Is there a way to connect with other schools participating in the program?
A: Yes! All active schools are listed on the website and you are welcome to contact them directly. In the future, there will be an online, internal space called a Bulletin Board where participating schools can share resources. In addition, a statewide Summit conference for representatives of participating schools is planned for 2009. A future goal is to link with green schools in other countries.
Q: What if no teachers are available to help? Can students still do this program?
A: The Green Team must include a minimum of one teacher, one other adult staff member, and two students. If you have difficulty meeting this requirement, please contact us.
Q: How often should our Green Team meet?
A: You can meet as often as you like and as often as you need to, to accomplish the requirements of the Tier.
Q: How long does it take and what do you have to do?
A: The program has four Tiers and each Tier can be accomplished within a school year. Your school could potentially reach the highest level of certified Washington Green Schools within four years. However, each school sets its own pace. Check out How the Program Works.
Q: Can we get points for something our school is already doing?
A. Yes, you will be able to get a specified number of points for your current actions. However, the intent of the program is to inspire you to expand your efforts for greater reduction of your school’s environmental and carbon footprint.
